Wheelchairs 4 Kids Keeps Kids Mobile, Tampa Bay
Wheelchairs 4 Kids is a Tampa Bay nonprofit dedicated to providing disabled children in low-income families with equipment such as wheelchairs, ramps, expanded doors and other vital accommodations.
ImagineĀ youāre a growing child with a physical disability that prevents you from walking. Your wheelchair is too small. And there is no money to buy a newĀ one.Ā Ā
Itās that harshĀ reality that motivatedĀ Madeline Robinson to createĀ Wheelchairs 4 Kids, a nonprofit entity dedicated to providingĀ low-incomeĀ familiesĀ with disabled children withĀ equipment such as wheelchairs, ramps,Ā expandedĀ doorsĀ andĀ otherĀ vitalĀ accommodations.
āWeāve comeĀ across kids who couldnāt join their friends on outings or parents who struggled to transfer their growingĀ children into theirĀ beds or a bathtub,ā saysĀ Robinson. āWeāve had a little girl who could not get upstairsĀ inĀ her home, another that could not get her wheelchair through the bathroom door.Ā Once I started delving into it, the myriad of challenges that came to my attention were astonishing.Ā These families deserveĀ more.ā
RobinsonĀ saysĀ Wheelchairs 4 KidsĀ depends heavily onĀ donations to achieveĀ its goals.Ā āSome of it is gently used and refurbished,ā says Robinson.Ā āMost isĀ new because most of the children have special requirements.Ā The fit is most important. We tryĀ to get chairs thatĀ āgrowā with the children.Ā Manufacturers and distributors give us discounts, but we try to get organizations and businesses to sponsor specific children in their area.Ā We also do special events to raise funds.ā
Children who qualify for help throughĀ Wheelchairs 4 Kids areĀ referredĀ byĀ health professionals andĀ have been declined by insuranceĀ providers and/or Medicaid.Ā
RobinsonĀ says requests for help continue toĀ flow intoĀ her office.Ā āRight now, weāre all volunteers working out of our homes. We needĀ an office, which would enable us to do so much more.Ā Iād like toĀ expandĀ our programs.Ā Weād love to be able to install roll-in showers,Ā to build a few accessible playgrounds andĀ have fun outings for our kids with activities geared for kids with physical disabilities.ā
