University of Tampa Gets $50,000 For Strength Supplement

University of Tampa receives a $50,000 grant to study effects of supplement on human strength and performance.

The University of TampaĀ (UT) received a $50,000 grant toĀ study the effects of an amino acid thatĀ couldĀ improve athletic performance.

The funds wereĀ given byĀ Metabolic Technologies, Inc. (MTI),Ā toĀ help researchers at UT’sĀ Department of Health Sciences and HumanĀ PerformanceĀ complete a 12-week study ofĀ the effects ofĀ aĀ supplementĀ onĀ humanĀ strength and muscle mass. MTI is an Iowa-based company dedicated to the development of nutritional products.

As Jacob Wilson, associate professor of health sciences and human performance at UT explains it, HMB, otherwise known as β-Hydroxy β-methylbutyric acid, is critical in the metabolic process of converting amino acids to muscle in the human body. The supplement he and his team is working on would be created from HMB.

ā€œBasically, we have whole proteins, chicken, beef and things like that,ā€ explains Wilson.Ā ā€œThere’s a particular amino acid in these that weĀ think is responsible for this. AndĀ it’sĀ calledĀ leucine.Ā WeĀ thinkĀ HMB isĀ responsible forĀ helping to turnĀ leucine intoĀ muscle.ā€

Wilson saysĀ HMB assists theĀ human body by:

1.Ā StimulatingĀ the actual building ofĀ muscleĀ and how rapidly it grows;
2.Ā PreventingĀ muscle tissue breakdown;
3.Ā Increasing theĀ endurance properties of the cell.

WilsonĀ says the studyĀ may have wide-ranging effects on athletic performance.

ā€œIf you look at performance on several different levels, it’s not about just performing on one day,ā€ Wilson says. ā€œIt’s about performance over several days. For some it may take 72 hours to recover from hard training. But with this [supplement] it may take them 48 hours. So think about what this does forĀ a [baseball] pitcher. You’d be able to start faster. Think about if you’re in the military, you’re able to recover from hard training faster the next day.ā€
