Tampa Bay Strategy: Grow International Trade, Jobs
A coalition of public and private entities in Tampa Bay pledge collaboration in growing international trade, increasing global competitiveness.
Top officials from Tampa Bay business andĀ economic entitiesĀ joined U.S.Ā Commerce Under Secretary FranciscoĀ SanchezĀ at the Port of Tampa on Monday, Feb. 6, to sign a Memo Of Intent (MOI)Ā thatĀ serves to create collaborations and connections among trade exporters and government officials to build a business strategy that will attract more jobs to Tampa Bay.
āIndividually none of usĀ has the potential toĀ fulfillĀ and carry out on a sustained level anĀ international trade,ā says StuartĀ Rogel, president and CEOĀ ofĀ theĀ Tampa Bay Partnership. āButĀ collectively we can sustain and focus on areas where we can bear fruit.āĀ
The entities represented at the MOI signing includeĀ theĀ International Trade Administration, Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners, the City of Tampa, and their partners, the Hillsborough County Aviation Authority, Small Business Development Center at the University of South Florida, the Tampa Bay Partnership, the Tampa Hillsborough Economic Development Corporation, the University of South Florida, the University of Tampa and the Tampa Port Authority.Ā
āNot only is this aĀ sign of the Tampa Bay communityĀ coming together to advance internationalĀ activities,ā says Rogel. āBut the under secretaryāsĀ [presence]Ā representsĀ an administration that wishes to double export activity over the next five years.Ā Sanchez talked about how theyāre on track to meet thatĀ goal,Ā whichĀ is in line with Florida Gov. Scottās goal to expand the stateās export activity.Ā So weāre seeing thisĀ [MOI signing] as consistent with efforts on a state and federal level.ā
TheĀ signing is in part anĀ answer toĀ President ObamaāsĀ National Export Initiative (NEI) to double U.S. commercial exports by the end of 2014.
