NonProfit Helps Professionals Transition To Teaching
American Board visits Tampa to help certify potential teachers.
Ever wondered if you haveĀ what it takes toĀ shape young minds?
ProfessionalsĀ interested in finding outĀ if they have theĀ stuff needed to be aĀ difference-making teacherĀ may want to attendĀ a meeting taking place at 6:30 p.m.Ā on April 18, 2012, atĀ The University of South FloridaāsĀ 40 FiftyĀ Lofts Apartments atĀ 4050 Rocky CircleĀ in Tampa. AĀ certification specialist fromĀ American Board, a nationalĀ nonprofitĀ organizationĀ that helpsĀ recruit and certify professionals, will be on hand to explainĀ howĀ toĀ the organization can helpĀ would-be teachersĀ obtain theĀ certification and licensingĀ necessary toĀ getĀ in front ofĀ a class.Ā
āCareer changersĀ have very little time, veryĀ little money and areĀ very busy,āĀ explains Albert Chen, CEO of American Board. āButĀ there are so many hoops to jump through. BillĀ Gates wouldnāt be able to teach computer science. Colin Powell couldnāt teach civics.Ā You have to be licensed to become a teacher in the state of Florida. We tryĀ and break that downĀ for you.ā
Chen says attendees can expect toĀ learn about themselves as well as his organization at theĀ April 18 meeting.Ā āPeople really like to talk to people when they are considering a career change,āĀ says Chen. āThereās something about that person-to-person contact. Participants can expect toĀ be walked through the reasons why people go into education. We believe if you want to help children then youāll be motivated and have a passion for the job.ā
Chen says that while there is a fee forĀ American Board programs,Ā those who enrollĀ can expectĀ on average toĀ be readyĀ to teach within one year.Ā āWhen someone asksĀ me how longĀ it will takeĀ to prepareĀ for theĀ exams,Ā I say, āItās up to you.āĀ If you take an aggregate of people it takes about 10 months to one year. For those who stickĀ with our program,Ā our success rate is 97 percent.ā
