Restoration Of Old Hyde Park Art Center Under Way

In 1899 a two-room wood frame building was built on DeLeon Street to serve as a temporary school. Since then the structure has been the lunch room for the John B. Gorrie Elementary School, a public library and now the home of the Old Hyde Park Art Center at 705 Swann Ave. An $18,000 restoration of the historical building is under way.

Anyone eager for a chance to get a first look at the new Ulele Restaurant can buy a ticket to the 13th Annual Tampa Heights Tour of Homes. Richard Gonzmart and the Columbia Restaurant Group are opening the restaurant's doors as a special tour feature, nearly two months before the restaurant officially opens in the city's restored Water Works buillding. Artist Chosen For Public Art Project At Perry Harvey Sr. Park

Public art will be a major part of the redesign at Perry Harvey Sr. Park and will honor the history of the black community and its musical heritage. Tampa City Council approved a $15,000 contract for Pittsburgh artist James Simon, who will create larger-than-life sculptures for the park's southern gateway.
