Mission Foods Rolls Into Lakeland, 133 Jobs
Lakeland, already a hub for food manufacturing and distribution, isĀ adding a newĀ ingredient to itsĀ businessĀ palette: Mission Foods.
Mission Foods,Ā maker of chips, wraps,Ā taco shells and other tortilla products, is expanding its manufacturingĀ and distributionĀ operationsĀ to aĀ facility in Lakeland, and adding 133Ā jobs.
According to Claudia Tritton, business development director for Lakelandās EconomicĀ DevelopmentĀ Council,Ā Mission is in the process of retrofitting part of a 168,000-square-foot warehouse at 2125 Interstate DriveĀ with manufacturing equipment and aims to be ready toĀ produce by August 1, 2012.Ā Tritton says distribution activities are alreadyĀ underway in aĀ portion of theĀ facility. Mission FoodsĀ could not be reached forĀ comment.
āWe love manufacturers because of the capitalĀ they offer,ā saysĀ Tritton. āThey come in and add equipment. Once they putĀ that equipment in, they donāt generally move it again.Ā Mission isĀ doing distribution fromĀ this locationĀ now. There areĀ people there workingĀ already, justĀ not manufacturing yet.āĀ
Tritton saysĀ MissionĀ has 20 other manufacturing facilities around the country, including one in Georgia. Lakeland competed with GeorgiaĀ for MissionāsĀ commercialĀ business. Lakeland was Missionās final decision.
āWe competed with Georgia forĀ the project,ā saysĀ Tritton.Ā āMission has a facility there but theyĀ eventually decided onĀ Lakeland. So weāre very fortunateĀ to have them.Ā The state of FloridaĀ gave themĀ quick responseĀ training dollars ā $1,500 perĀ job.
āMissionās been great to work with. Theyāve hit the groundĀ running. We have Publix,Ā Pepperidge Farm andĀ Flowers Foods here already.Ā So weāre reallyĀ happy to addĀ Mission toĀ the mix.ā
