KeriCure: Tampa Researcher Creates Liquid Bandage

Innovative liquid bandage emerges from research at the University of South Florida.

AĀ University of South Florida (USF) alum has launched a company that producesĀ a liquid bandageĀ she plans to market to veterinarians,Ā with the hopes of getting FDA approval toĀ later sellĀ for human use.

Dr. Kerriann Greenhalgh launched KeriCure, IncĀ inĀ January 2011, whichĀ holds the exclusive worldwide rights to all medical applications ofĀ theĀ technology behind its liquid bandage.

ā€œWhat we have is a topical bandage product that isĀ covered forĀ sales in veterinary,ā€Ā explains Greenhalgh. ā€œSo that’s where we’re going to start. We’re hoping to sell to vets in the next couple months. We’re also filingĀ for FDA approval forĀ use onĀ humans.ā€

The bandageĀ is a solid but elasticĀ barrier thatĀ mirrorsĀ properties of the skin, providingĀ a breathableĀ film that coversĀ damaged tissue. BecauseĀ it’s so flexible, it can provideĀ protectionĀ forĀ woundedĀ parts of the body thatĀ would normally beĀ difficult for conventional bandages toĀ cover. TheĀ liquidĀ bandage also isĀ bacteriaĀ resistant.Ā

Greenhalgh saysĀ that while herĀ experience inĀ the privateĀ Research andĀ DevelopmentĀ sector helped her learn the business behindĀ promoting herĀ product, sheĀ owes much to USF forĀ helping her develop both theĀ product andĀ the company.Ā

ā€œI attendedĀ USF as undergrad, where I earnedĀ a chemistry degree,ā€ explains Greenhalgh. ā€œI got to do research for EdwardĀ Turos, PhD, aĀ professor there. He convinced me to stay and go to grad school.Ā While I wasĀ there I wasĀ lucky enoughĀ to getĀ a fellowship where I was required to developĀ a product for skin.

ā€œAs I wasĀ developing my product forĀ preclinical trials and presenting it, IĀ was hiredĀ to work for a company as aĀ product manager. I got firstĀ FDA approvalĀ while I was workingĀ for them.Ā When thatĀ company moved toĀ Georgia, IĀ didn’t want to shelve my skin product any more.Ā So I started doing research on how to goĀ about getting it approved. Then I sat down with a groupĀ of colleagues at USF andĀ they said go for it.Ā And I did.Ā WithoutĀ USF, IĀ wouldn’t have been able to do all this.ā€
