Video: Tampa As A ‘Community Of Flat Faces’

In this video produced by Mighty Fine Production Company of Tampa and first aired as part of WEDU’s ArtsPlus program, Tampa Artist Edgar Sanchez Cumbas discusses how people’s perceptions of themselves and others can be formed by skin color – both their own and a variety of experiences with others.

His recent show, “Community of Flat Faces,” depicts these ideas through paintings and sculpture.

“The artist uses richly layered paint, in colors that mimic skin tones, and includes found materials to create 3-dimensional paintings that beg for the viewer to look deeply at the inner layers,” says Megan Voeller, co-Host and co-Producer of ArtsPlus and art critic at Creative Loafing.

The video features Sanchez Cumbas, his wife Sophia Sanchez Nakis and their daughter Ava Marchella. Also shown are Patty and Vik Sriram. Credit for sound design goes to Aaron Lepley. Co-Producer and Director is Frank Rodriguez of Mighty Fine Production, A Video Production Company in Downtown Tampa.

WEDU’s ArtsPlus program airs on Thursday evenings. The “Flat Faces” exhibit appeared at HCC Dale Mabry Gallery 221  this past spring.
