Clearwater Entrepreneur To Snap Up Walmart Biz
Snap It Screw is an eyeglass repair kit designed by a Clearwater woman.
Sometimes fateĀ turnsĀ onĀ aĀ pin.
At least thatās whatĀ happened to Nancy Tedeschi, a part-time Clearwater resident, when she helpedĀ her mother repair a pairĀ of eyeglasses.Ā ThatĀ simple act of helpfulnessĀ led her to createĀ Snap It Screw, an eyeglass repairĀ kitĀ she has patented and isĀ currently selling to retailers, with hopesĀ of going after überĀ retailer Walmart.
āMy mother was doing volunteer work in Nicaragua,ā explains Tedeschi.Ā āShe broke her glasses,Ā so she stuck a pin in them. When she got home,Ā she asked me to help fix them. So I ended up designing thisĀ dangly bead that hung from herĀ glasses. Everyone would stop her and ask about her charm. She told me I should invent a charm. So I did.ā
āBut I really didnātĀ start working on a kitĀ until 2009 becauseĀ I had a full-timeĀ job,ā Tedeschi continues.Ā āSo what ended up happening is that I invented the screw and the beads got put on the back burner. I got aĀ U.S. patentĀ for the screwĀ on Dec. 6, 2011, andĀ I ended up doing a little promo in a magazine.Ā They posted aĀ picture of the screw.Ā Then an optometrist called me from Long Island and he couldnāt believe someone had inventedĀ something so simple. HeĀ helped me distribute it to otherĀ opticians.Ā I haveĀ since gottenĀ my product in select Walgreens. AndĀ now Iām going after the bigĀ boy, Walmart.ā
With the helpĀ of AlexĀ Benshoff,Ā a grad student at the UniversityĀ of Tampa, Tedeschi hasĀ enteredĀ Walmartās Get On the Shelf contest toĀ getĀ her product in front of Walmart shoppers.Ā ProductsĀ are voted on viaĀ social media platformsĀ such asĀ Facebook and Twitter as well as by text and email.Ā
Tedeschi has since begun sharing her experiences with otherĀ budding inventors.Ā āI have patentsĀ pending all over the world,ā says Tedeschi.Ā āAndĀ I wouldnāt wish this process on anyone.Ā Itās so frustrating.Ā Iāve Googled my way through it. I just canāt believe how people did this before the Internet. But itāsĀ changed my life.Ā Iām able toĀ goĀ after my passion, which is to help other inventors find a new way.ā
Tedeschi offers thisĀ advice to thoseĀ with an idea they want to bring to the marketplace: āFind a mentor. Find someone you can trust. The world out there is very jaded. A lot of people with their hands out. If anyone asks for money up front, run. They are not in your best interest.ā
