Tampa General Hospital Organ Donations Set Record

Tampa General Hospital (TGH) jumps from 10th to fourth in the nation in number of organ transplants performed.

On Dec. 30, 2011, aĀ Pasco man receivedĀ a lung at Tampa GeneralĀ HospitalĀ (TGH), making it theĀ 500th organ transplant performed there,Ā andĀ TGH the fourthĀ highestĀ forĀ volume transplantation outĀ of 258 centers throughoutĀ the nationĀ forĀ 2011.

The Organ Procurement and TransplantationĀ Network (OPTN) recently announcedĀ national transplantation figures, which also show thatĀ that each ofĀ TGH’s transplant programs — heart, liver, lung, kidney/pancreas, and kidney — ranked among the country’s 10 busiest centers last year.

Angie Korsun, administrator for the Transplant andĀ Ventricular Assist DeviceĀ (VAD)Ā divisionĀ atĀ TGH, credits the team effort putĀ forth by theĀ staff more thanĀ anything else. ā€œI don’t know if you can say it was a technological innovation that contributed to our success. I think it’s more a matter of theĀ fact that everyone — from theĀ physicians who evaluateĀ the patients whoĀ need a transplant toĀ the surgeonsĀ whoĀ are going toĀ evaluateĀ theĀ organs and bring them back to theĀ operating room staff, to theĀ ICUĀ nurses — it’s truly a team effort. A lot of hardworking, talented people whoĀ take a great deal of pride in whatĀ they do.

ā€œIt’sĀ also due in largeĀ part to the factĀ thatĀ weĀ have a great organ procurement entity inĀ our backyard,ā€ says Korsun.Ā ā€œThat gives us an advantage.Ā The workĀ doneĀ through LifelinkĀ allows us to performĀ quickerĀ surgery andĀ provide better post op monitoring.ā€

OtherĀ OPTN statisticsĀ showĀ that:

TGH’sĀ most significantĀ volume increaseĀ wasĀ for liver transplants, which jumped fromĀ 91Ā transplantsĀ in 2010 to 126 in 2011,Ā makingĀ itsĀ liver transplant program theĀ ninthĀ busiestĀ among the country’s 131Ā liver transplant programs.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā
TGH’sĀ Ā heartĀ transplant program maintained its 2010 ranking as the nation’s fifth busiest among the 126Ā centers in the country with 58 transplants performedĀ in 2011.Ā Ā Ā Ā

TGH’sĀ kidney transplant program ranked among theĀ top 10 inĀ 2011 with 240 transplants.

TGH staff performed 20Ā kidney-pancreas transplants in 2011,Ā making it the sixth busiestĀ kidney-pancreas program.
Ā
The lungĀ transplantĀ programĀ at TGH was the eighth busiest among the 63 centers performing lung transplants in the country, with 56Ā performed in 2011.
