Bank On Florida Initiative Launches In Tampa Bay
The Florida Prosperity Partnership launches the Bank On Florida initiative to help more Tampa Bay residents access banking.
Florida residentsĀ without bank accounts are the target of a new initiativeĀ called Bank OnĀ Florida that is designed to increase financial literacy and help people navigate the sometimes intimidating complexities of banking.
The Florida ProsperityĀ Partnership launchedĀ Bank On Florida to bring togetherĀ financial institutions and community partners throughout Tampa BayĀ to help residentsĀ access mainstream financial services and financial education.
āTheĀ whole idea behindĀ Bank OnĀ Florida is to build on existingĀ bank programs,ā saysĀ Bill Mills, director of strategic initiatives for Florida ProsperityĀ Partnership.Ā āWe are tryingĀ to build theĀ initiativeĀ onĀ models usedĀ acrossĀ the state.Ā Most peopleĀ [whoĀ donāt currently haveĀ a bank] haveĀ lost a bank accountĀ due to bank fees. There are alsoĀ people who have just never had a bank account. So if someone comes intoĀ Bank On FloridaĀ inĀ TampaĀ Bay, thatĀ person will get financialĀ education ā learn how to use aĀ bank account correctly. AndĀ then theyāll be put withĀ the correct financial institution, which varies. A credit union may make sense for them. It depends on how much they intend to keep in their account.ā
The program is basedĀ on successful models in about 100 cities around the country. Its goal isĀ to increase financial stabilityĀ byĀ providing access to bank accounts and financial education, making itĀ easier toĀ saveĀ for theĀ future, manage money and access credit and lower-interest loans.
A pilotĀ Bank On program ā the first in Florida āĀ launchedĀ in St. Petersburg inĀ August 2009 and hasĀ alreadyĀ opened more than 2,500 accounts, which madeĀ it the perfect placeĀ to launch the Bank OnĀ Florida program.
The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation [FDIC] estimates thatĀ more than 7 percentĀ ofĀ Florida households are āunbanked,ā meaning no one in the household has any type of checking or savings account.Ā
