Tampa General Receives Recognition For Electronic Conversion

Tampa General Hospital receives Stage 6 rating from HIMSS Analytics on its efforts to convert from paper to electronic medical records.

Elizabeth Lindsay-Wood saysĀ it was aĀ hugeĀ hill to climb.Ā But she wouldn’t have done it any other way.

Tampa GeneralĀ Hospital’s (TGH) senior VP and chief informatics officer, announcedĀ the hospital’s latest milestone in itsĀ conversion from paperĀ to electronic medicalĀ records: recognition from aĀ nationally recognized healthcare IT company forĀ itsĀ efforts.

HIMSS Analytics, a subsidiary of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS),Ā has ratedĀ TGH’sĀ conversionĀ a StageĀ 6 on its Electronic Medical Record AdoptionĀ Model.Ā TGH is oneĀ of only 5 percentĀ of the more than 5,300 U.S. hospitalsĀ tracked that hasĀ reached StageĀ 6.Ā HIMSS Analytics’ modelĀ evaluates the progress and impact of electronic medical record systems for hospitals in its nationalĀ database. By trackingĀ progress — measured in stages from 0-7 — hospitals can review their progress and theĀ effectsĀ the implementationĀ has had on quality of care.

In basic terms,Ā what StageĀ 6 meansĀ is TGHĀ has made a significant commitment to electronic medical records,Ā is enjoyingĀ improved patient safety, clinician support, clinician recruitment as a resultĀ and is able to startĀ evaluatingĀ dataĀ that monitorĀ improvements.Ā Ā

Lindsay-Wood saysĀ that the hospital’sĀ innovative approach is responsible forĀ its stellar results.Ā ā€œThere are a lot of different ways you canĀ implement [a conversion],ā€ says Lindsay-Wood.Ā ā€œA lot of hospitals do it slowly, startingĀ with aĀ piece of it, like documentation, while doctor’s ordersĀ are still handwritten. But what we didĀ was a big bang. We said, ā€˜We’reĀ gonna go live all on the same day and the same time.’ The ideaĀ we are all doing itĀ atĀ theĀ same time across all departmentsĀ was significant.ā€

ā€œIt was aĀ big hill to climb,ā€ says Lindsay-Wood.Ā ā€œBut once you climb it you see immediate value. A doc can be in a parking lot and look at his smart phone and all the info is available to himĀ or her to provide care toĀ the patient.Ā And there are alerts and reminders to helpĀ them make better decisions. These patients are so complex, so to get these reminders and alerts are so helpful. It’s so much safer and faster.ā€

Lindsay-Wood offers the followingĀ advice toĀ otherĀ medical entities facing conversion,Ā which is mandatoryĀ by 2014.Ā ā€œGoingĀ faster gets you faster to patient safety andĀ quality of care. Going slower doesn’t necessarily work out all the kinks. Because you really don’t know what you have until you actually use the system.Ā You have to be integrated inĀ your [doctor’s}Ā practices not just the hospital. You needĀ everyoneĀ on theĀ same record.ā€Ā
