Harvard Study Cites St. Petersburg’s Poynter Institute

In a paper titled “Can Nonprofits Save Journalism? Legal Constraints and Opportunities,” Harvard University Researcher Marion R. Fremont-Smith explores nonprofit media models that might serve as viable alternatives to business models used by traditional media organizations.

While many media outlets, particularly daily newspapers, face severe cutbacks and even what some consider the frightening possibility of shutting down, other organizations are able to let their nonprofit associations work for them. Among examples of such models Fremont-Smith cites is the St. Petersburg-based Poynter Institute, which owns The St. Petersburg Times.
