Tampa-based company Thermablok, Inc., is offering its product, a high
insulating material known as aerogel, for use in the oil spill relief
efforts in the Gulf Coast.
The material, currently used by NASA
in spacesuits and in Mars missions, is capable of soaking up 14 to 20
times its weight in oil, according to Don Adrian, head of Thermablok
thermal research.
Once the oil has been
absorbed by the Thermoblok, the oil can be safely extracted and the
material can be reused to soak up more oil slicked water.
