Antarctica may seem like an unlikely place to find the cure for a tropical diseases, but two USF researchers' recent paper, published in the
Journal of Natural Products, may have done this.
USF chemist Bill Baker has searched near and far for a compound that could potentially treat both malaria and leishmaniasis, a lesser-known disease that has been gaining prominence in Bangladesh, Brazil and Sudan.
The potential cure lies in a bright red sea sponge found near the U.S. Arctic Program's Palmer Station.
