U.S Department of Education Secretary Arne Duncan recently announced the 19 states that are finalists in the latest round of Race to the Top grants. Florida, after losing out to Delaware and Tennessee in March, made the list.
Secretary Duncan said 10 to 15 states would be selected to receive education reform grants in the second round of funding.
Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, Education Commissioner Eric Smith, Florida Education Association President Andy Ford, Public Schools Chancellor Frances Haithcock and Miami-Dade Superintendent Alberto Carvalho will head to Washington, D.C. next month to campaign for Florida, according to
The Florida Times-Union.
The grants, which could reach as high as $700 million over a four-year period, will be awarded in September.
