As the economy recovers, Polk County officials are looking to develop the area into a super region.
Officials have examined transportation and logistical infrastructure, including the development of the University of South Florida Polytechnic's technical school and research facility alongside Interstate 4, an intermodal transportation hub located at the campus and the university's use of building business incubators in Lakeland and Winter Haven.
The county has also set aside $35 million in federal funding to widen U.S 98 to six lanes with a bicycle path, according to the
