St. Pete Elects First Openly Gay Official

The St. Petersburg Times reports that on January 2, 2010, the Sunshine City will swear in its first openly gay City Council member. Steve Kornell won more than 59 percent of the vote for St. Petersburg’s fifth district, which includes much of south St. Petersburg. The election of Kornell, a social worker, to the city council comes only a short while after Hillsborough County elected its first openly gay county commissioner and the City of Tampa hired its first lesbian police chief. Does this signify the ushering in of an era of tolerance for Tampa Bay’s sizable gay community?
