Awesome Tampa Bay Winner: Teacher Of Jailed Teens
Sylvia Albritton says sheĀ believes everyone has a story to tell.Ā And now she has $1,000 to putĀ her studentsāĀ stories into a nicely bound cover.
AlbrittonĀ receivedĀ the money as a giftĀ fromĀ Awesome Tampa Bay on Thursday, March 1, 2012.Ā It is the second award AwesomeĀ has given toĀ those whose work isĀ having a positive impact on the Tampa Bay region.
Albritton teaches youth ages 14 to 18 atĀ the FalkenburgĀ Jail in Hillsborough County.Ā Her studentsĀ are facingĀ adjudicationĀ as adults for crimes Albritton considersĀ acts committed withoutĀ thought for repercussions.Ā HerĀ writing program gives them an outlet for exploring their feelings about their lives and their actions.
āI retired after 35 years of teaching and I wasnātĀ tired,ā says Albritton.Ā āI wanted to teach again. My thought was a traditional
middle or high school. ButĀ what I ended up in was a drug treatmentĀ facility for at-risk kids.Ā And I loved it.Ā Now I teach at theĀ jail.
āIāve learned that our youth oftentimes donāt have an outlet for expression. And I think it helps them to write. Sometimes itās a thoughtless act and they donāt see the repercussions of it. This helps them confront that. I come home from work happy every day.ā
Albritton says sheĀ plans to use the money to create aĀ bound book of her studentsā writing.Ā āIĀ spokeĀ to myĀ principal about soliciting more writing and artwork from the studentsĀ and binding them in a book that addresses how weād do things differently given the chance.Ā Make it look like a professional text for the library at the school and maybe share with other programs as well. And you never know. I was told me thatĀ sometimes an award like this leads to other resources.Ā I could justĀ gatherĀ theĀ papers together and staple them myself. But thatās just not the same.ā
Awesome Tampa Bay is part ofĀ the Awesome Foundation, a national nonprofit thatĀ provides money toĀ those making a positive difference in their communities. Albritton was chosenĀ from nearly 70 applicants.
