She backpacked through Europe before attending the University of Iowa's Creative Writers' Workshop for two years. She has a journalism degree from Georgia College. Restoration Of Old Hyde Park Art Center Under Way

In 1899 a two-room wood frame building was built on DeLeon Street to serve as a temporary school. Since then the structure has been the lunch room for the John B. Gorrie Elementary School, a public library and now the home of the Old Hyde Park Art Center at 705 Swann Ave. An $18,000 restoration of the historical building is under way.
