Do you have a great idea for a software application? Or are you a web developer looking to work on an innovative project?
If so, Startup Weekend July 8-10 may be for you. Entrepreneurs, software developers and graphic designers are encouraged to attend this intense 54-hour event where groups will create a web or mobile application.
"On Friday night, everyone will have the opportunity to pitch their idea," says Jessica Barnett, co-organizer for Startup Weekend. "Then all of the ideas are narrowed down to the most popular choices, teams are created, and on Saturday and Sunday the groups work on creating their applications."
On Sunday night, Barnett says that judges will decide who has the best idea, and offer feedback on the pitched application.
"We have not selected our judges yet," Barnett says. "We are looking for venture capitalists or businesspeople that have experience with startups to be judges. We are also looking for sponsors."
Startup Weekends have taken place in the past at various cities, but co-organizer Susie Steiner says she is glad that the event is coming to Tampa.
"We really want to fill a void that Tampa has with startups," Steiner says. "Students who are studying business management, people who want to start their own business, or have started their own business can be involved with the event."
There is a cost involved with attending Startup Weekend; however students and early birds can get a discount.
"It's $100 to participate in the event," Barnett says. "Students or those who register before June 8 will get an early bird rate of $75."
A specific location has yet to be determined; however, Steiner says their website will have more details in coming weeks.
