Photo Slideshow: Rooster Statues Flock To Ybor City

Roosters and Ybor City go together like flame to a cigar.

So it's only fitting that the GaYbor District Coalition partnered with Hillsborough Community College Ybor City for a student art competition bringing to life 40-lbs. white ceramic roosters using paint, feathers, beads and even cigars in honor of Ybor's feathered residents.

Twenty students applied to take part in the competition; 10 were accepted to participate in a gallery exhibit at the Ybor Campus Art Gallery. Judges chose one student to win $1,000 in HCC tuition.

83 Degrees Managing Photographer Julie Branaman was at the event to capture the excitement surrounding the colorful roosters. Hear the winner's reaction just after the announcement was made and see images from the gallery opening in this photo slideshow.

Then make sure you keep your eyes peeled in May and June while in Ybor City as the roosters in all their splendor will be part of a public art display and scavenger hunt competition before the birds are auctioned for charity on June 13.
